Don't be fooled

Posted on Posted by JP on 14th Aug 2015

Many will say I am a little sensitive to this subject and it is because I am.  The other day I received a call from a potential customer stating he will be mailing in 2 bats to verify if they have been shaved and rolled.  He claimed the bats were not performing, tried contacting the company he originally paid to address his concerns and never received a response.  Sadly enough, this is a call I receive on a frequent basis.

I received the bats a few days later and opened them up.  1 bat was shaved and the other was not.  The one that was shaved, was shaved using a drill hone and the work was awful.  Not only was it hacked, the end cap seat (where the cap sits in) was completely ground down and the cap was essentially floating in place.  This is very common for drill honed bats and more than likely the cap would have exploded out of the bat in time.  I called him back, sent over a few pics to back up my findings and he was very upset and rightfully so.  He told me who the company was and it came as no surprise.  I will not share the name of this company, but i will share this.....

Pictures of scale weight before and "after" service, customer reviews and compression scores mean nothing as proof of service.  I too can put a 1oz weight on my scale, zero it out and then put your bat on it so it weighs 1oz less and do nothing to it.  I can have all my buddies text me and say how my bats are the best things ever, screen shot the image and post it online.  I can also manipulate the compression score (see my Verified Compression Results blog) and mislead you as well.  All these "proofs" are nothing but a decoy hiding the obvious and relevant question that should be answered...........what are you shaving my bat with if you are even shaving it at all?

If you view this companies website, you will notice they advertise a precision CNC lathe is used and there is 1 photo of a bat spinning in it.  Making this story even sadder, the picture of the lathe on this companies website isn't even their machine, it is a picture of another bat doctors machine I know 2000 miles away.  How they got the image, who knows, but the point here is this is the classic example of a company doing everything they can to deceive the consumer while claiming you are paying for a precision bat shaving / rolling service.

I asked the customer why he went with this company in the first place and he said price.  So now he has paid twice for a bat shaving service when he could have just paid once and been happy.  Saving $20 or so in my opinion when it comes to this type of service is not worth the aggravation unless you are 110% certain your bat is being serviced as stated.

We take pictures of EVERY batch of bats we shave.  We have 1000's of photos.  We also take videos if requested.  We post up videos on YouTube.  We provide you everything you should see along with a video should you choose upfront.  There is absolutely no reason why anyone would NOT want to post up what they use unless they are not using what they say at all.  I have no problems with the drill hone guys, just be honest in your service offering.  I do, however, have a problem with these companies lying to you all as it sours my companies image when things go wrong as I am in this business as well.  We pride ourselves in our craft and know first hand what it is like to be duped as I was conned myself years ago.

Do your research, ask simple yet relevant questions and make your choice.  There are options out there and there are companies doing this right, which is the way it should be.  It is ridiculous we have to go to the extent we do at times to prove ourselves because of companies like these, but we will prove our self every single time.  We have no problems sharing information and are 100% upfront and HONEST.  Any questions, feel free to give us a call, email or text
